Odessa port will receive powerful investments – SC “CTO”

SC "Container Terminal Odessa" presented the main directions of investing in Odessa port for the next three years.

The presentation took place in the framework of the International Transport Forum TRANS EXPO ODESSA 2018, which is held in Odessa on 26th -28th September, at the new container terminal of Odessa Port at the Quarantine Mole operated by SC “CTO”. Participants of the International Black Sea Transport Forum, as well as journalists from the regional and central media were invited to the event.

In the presence of numerous representatives of national and foreign transport business, Svetlana Yarovaya, Vice-President for Public Affairs of the company, opened the event. Philip Sweens, President of the company, made several program statements: "Introducing to you our new development program for the first time, I would like to emphasize that investments in Odessa port infrastructure play a really important role for HHLA group. The best evidence to it is four directions of the actually initiated investment process, four global components of this program. It is investing in the terminal infrastructure of the port, the development of intermodal transport throughout Ukraine, it is the expansion of our handling business at the expense of other cargo along with containers (which means our terminal becomes multifunctional), as well as the introduction of modern high-tech IT solutions which will be interesting for our customers and effective for the market."

To date, HHLA has already invested more than $150 million in the container terminal. To increase the capacity and improve the efficiency of the terminal, the company plans to invest a few tens of millions dollars more. "The mere fact of launching a new investment program is a landmark event for us and shows our belief in success of our container terminal in Odessa port and the prospects for the development of Ukrainian economy as a whole," noted Philip Sweens.

In September 2018, SC "CTO" started construction of the back yard for container storage and handling on the artificially created territory of the Quarantine mole with a total capacity of up to 3 thousand TEU. The yard is necessary due to the overall increase in the container volumes of the terminal in 2017-2018 and also due to the increase in cargo handling at the new berths 1-k and 2-k (over 40% of the total volumes of SC "CTO"). The new yard, for which two new RTG cranes will be purchased at the first stage, is scheduled to be put into operation in the summer – autumn, 2019. "For us, it is very important that Germany, in a difficult time for Ukraine, invests heavily in the development of the container terminal in Odessa port, which is a significant contribution to the development of Ukraine's transport infrastructure. No foreign investor will invest money if they do not see a constructive position and cooperation from the side of the state partners. Thus I would like to thank the administration of the port in the person of Igor Tkachuk, the management of the State Enterprise "USPA" in the person of Raivis Veckagans, for their assistance and cooperation in the successful implementation of this project."

To date, the regular container trains have been launched from Odessa-Port station in the directions of Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipro and Kharkiv. In the next few days, a block train is expected to be launched in the direction of Kyiv, in the future - to other destinations. The train to Ivano-Frankivsk region was launched 5 months ago and today it is loaded by more than 85%. The train to Dnipro, which began to run only two months ago, is already loaded on average by 60%. The train to Kharkiv (there were only 4 shipments) is loaded on average to 30%. "With each new run, the load of block trains is growing; the customers are very satisfied and welcome the development of this service. The routing of container traffic and the launching of regular block trains is a new level of service and a huge step forward, the greatest efficiency for the state, the railway and Odessa port. For this, I want to thank separately the new progressive management of Ukrzaliznytsia - Evgeniy Kravtsov and Vyacheslav Yeremin, who together with us, the Administration of Odessa Port and our neighbors, the terminal “Brooklyn-Kiev Port”, managed to launch the regular container block trains from Odessa port. Investments, increasing level of service, all these are the components of the success of SC "CTO" - the leader of Ukrainian container market", - noted the General Director of the company Anastas Kokkin.

In his speech to the business community, Igor Tkachuk, the head of Odessa port administration, pointed out: "SC “CTO” has increased cargo handling by more than 10% this year." We expect the further growth of the container business and the increase of volumes at this enterprise. This year is also significant for the port administration by the fact that together with the German party we have resumed the construction of the new breakwater at the Quarantine Mole. It is a large breakthrough for us. The breakwater construction was suspended for almost five years ago. Today, this project is under the watchful eye of the Prime Minister of Ukraine, the Ministry of Infrastructure, and what is significant, of the German government. The number of delegations that have recently visited Odessa port, the pace of work and the number of investment projects that have been launched, show that Odessa port is successfully developing and moving forward. And it is largely due to our reliable partners, who have been working with us for 17 years. I mean the largest German logistic group HHLA and SC “CTO”.
