Because of coronavirus pandemic the year 2020 became a year of difficult trials for the transport business. Despite this HHLA, does not change their plans for further investment in the Ukrainian economy. So, in addition to investing in the expansion of the Quarantine Mole container terminal, the German partners announced creation of the Ukrainian Intermodal Company (UIC) this year, which will develop container rail transportation, incl. from the Odessa port. To support this Container Terminal Odessa is implementing an investment project to double terminal's rail handling capacity to ensure handling regular container trains.

At the briefing on October 27, 2020, Mrs. Svetlana Yarovaya, Vice President for Public and Political Affairs of HHLA CTO and Hamburg Ambassador confirmed firmness of the HHLA course towards the development of their projects in Ukraine.

“As an Honorary Representative of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in Odessa, I would like to note that the German company HHLA of the Hamburg port with a turnover of more than 1.25 billion EUR is a consistent and most potent German investor in the maritime transport industry of Ukraine. During 20 years of close and mutually beneficial cooperation between the ports of Odessa and Hamburg, not only new jobs with the highest social security were created, but also the most important cultural projects for Odessa and Hamburg were actively supported. Today under most difficult economic conditions associated with an epidemiological quarantine situation, Hamburg not only has not stopped its investments, but is doing its best to increase cargo turnover and attract new customers.”
